Henry knox

       Henry Knox was a 280 pound man who was born in Boston during 1750.His dad was a shipmaster carrying trade with the West Indies. William Knox died at age fifty. Henry then gave up school to support his mother. After his dad’s death, he became a clerk of a Boston bookstore.

          In 1772 he became a member of the Boston Grenadier Corps. He also volunteered at the battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. Henry’s leader was General Ward. While Henry was in Boston he met General George Washington and his army there. George and Henry developed a good Friendship.

 

        Washington was in need of artillery so he pointed out that Henry was the person for that, so he promoted Knox to be the person in charge of artillery. After capturing the British, Henry help Connecticut and Rhode Island to defend incase of the British returned. Washington Then took his army to New York to defend. Knox joined their army. On a Christmas night Washington made a trip over to Delaware which was lead by Henry, over to the Hessian army at Trenton and captured 100 men and supplies. They sent back the men that were captured because 2500 were in the American army. For Henrys help during this event, he was promoted to Brigadier-General. While George was attacking the British in New Jersey, Henry was sent to get a battalion for his artillery. He also had to create an arsenal for Washington’s army.

 

      Knox was almost displaced of his position in charge of artillery by Ducondray. But in 1777 while Duccondray was riding  on a horse looking for Washington in Chester County, Pennsylvania, just before he was about to enter a flat bottom boat to cross the Schuylkill River, he lost control of the horse, both the horse and rider fell in the water, and Ducondray drowned. Knox had to help organize and setup forts to keep the army safe at the winter camp from the British attacking. He also had permission to leave Valley Forge to go see his family in Massachusetts. But then he returned to help General Von Steuben train the artillery men at Valley Forge. Washington and his troops left Valley Forge on June 19th and headed for battle at Monmouth. Knox sent as represative of Washington to support the Northern States. After Cornwallis surrenders on Oct 19, 1781, Knox was promoted to major General, An Honor Well Earned. He was stationed at West point with the troops, and remained there until there was an agreement for the British to leave New York.

 

       Four officers assemble at Fraune Tavern to take leave of their commander-in-chief. So Washington stood back and Knox went back to Boston. General Knox and his family settled at Thomaston, Maine in 1796.He then had business at Thomaston such as, cattle-raising, brick making, and ship building .He also entertained numerous guest, and gave sometime in service to his state in general court and governors council. In 1806 Henry Knox died unexpectedly at age fifty. He was buried in Thomaston.
